Dear Families,

Welcome to our monthly 6th grade social studies newsletter! I am excited to share different topics and activities with your child. Our goal is to make learning engaging and to help your child explore all of the wonderful things our history has to offer. Below, you will find an overview of our learning objectives, key concepts we are covering, and fun ways for you to participate in your child’s learning journey.

This Month’s Learning Objectives (TEKS Focus)

This month, we are focusing on several important topics in world cultures and geography, in line with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards:

  1. Geography and Map Skills (TEKS 6.3C)

*Students will use maps, globes, and geographic tools to analyze and interpret data about various regions of the world.

How You Can Help at Home

Geography Game Night: Play a fun geography game at home! Challenge your child to locate different countries or continents on a globe or map. Websites like Seterra offer free geography quizzes.

TEKS Connections for Families

Here’s how the TEKS objectives we are covering this month connect to your child’s social studies learning:

* Geography (6.3C): The student understands the factors that influence the locations and characteristics of locations of various contemporary societies on maps and/or globes. The student is expected to: (C) identify and locate major physical and human geographic features such as landforms, water bodies, and urban centers of various places and regions.

The learners will identify and locate major physical and human geographic features by exploring or creating either a map in the National Geographic map maker, ixl skill plans, or test your knowledge at Seterra.

Classroom Activities & Highlights

Interactive Mapping Project: This month, students are creating interactive maps that highlight major physical regions around the world. Ask your child to share their project.

Upcoming Events

Join us next month for a fun evening of geography games and interactive activities that bring world geography to life. Families will have the chance to engage in activities designed to test their knowledge of world maps, physical features, and cultures. More information will be provided later this month.

Upcoming Field Trip

In November, we are looking to take a field trip to the Texas Science & Natural History Museum so we are looking for some chaperones. In the meantime, please go to History Museum with your child to get acquainted with the museum and the natural history of the State of Texas.
